Freedom of Expression in Israel: The Military’s IDF Censor Pressures Publishers, Reviews News Stories and Social Media, Bans Publication of Docs. from State Archives,

Michael Schaeffer Omer-Man +972 Magazine 26 September 2016 The Israeli Military Censor has outright banned the publication of 1,936 articles and redacted some information from 14,196 articles over the past five years. That is 1,936 articles that professional journalists and editors decided were of public interest but which never saw the light of day. In fact, the IDF Censor redacted at least some information from one in five articles submitted to it for review since 2011, according to data provided by the Israeli army at the request of +972 Magazine, its Hebrew-language sister site Local Call, and The Movement for Freedom of Information. Under the new chief IDF censor who entered the job last year, there has been a dramatic rise in the number of instances in which the Censor contacts publishers with demands to alter or remove items that have already been published — almost double the number of post-publication censorship attempts in years past. At ...

Anti-Palestine Media Bias Remains Untouchable Even to Canada’s Media Critics

Yves Engler Dissident Voice 23 September 2016 Media coverage of world affairs mostly focuses on Ottawa/Washington’s perspective. While the dominant media is blatant in its subservience to Canadian/Western power, even independent media is often afraid to challenge the foreign policy status quo. A recent  Canadaland podcast  simultaneously highlighted anti-Palestinian media bias and the fear liberal journalists’ face in discussing one of the foremost social justice issues of our time. The media watchdog’s discussion of the Green Party’s recent resolutions supporting Palestinian rights started strong with Canadaland publisher Jesse  Brown  laying out three “facts”: In an editorial titled “[Elizabeth] May must renounce anti-Israel resolutions” the  Vancouver Sun  (reposted on the  Ottawa Citizen  and  Calgary Herald  websites) called Independent Jewish Voices (IJV) “an anti-Israel group that uses the fig leaf of Je...

Ten principles of democracy: The Nation, State Sovereignty and the European Union

Anthony Coughlan Democrat Broadsheet (Number 12) Nations and Nation States make up the international community. The trends constituting "globalisation," or the supranationalism of the European Union, affect the environment of Nation States, but do not make them out-of-date. Shared nationhood is the normal basis of democratic States in the modern world, as is shown by the advent of many new Nation States since 1989, and the likely advent of many more in coming decades. These ten democratic principles are proposed as fruitful ways of approaching questions of nationhood, State sovereignty and the European Union. 1. INTERNATIONALISM, NOT NATIONALISM, IS THE PRIMARY CATEGORY We are internationalists on the basis of our solidarity as members of the human race. As internationalists we seek the emancipation of mankind. The human race is divided into nations. Therefore we stand for the self-determination of nations. The right of nations to self-de...

Brussels EU President Jean-Claude Juncker’s ‘State Of The Union’ Address: Fiddling While Europe Burns

Paul Anthony Taylor Dr. Rath Health Foundation 15 September 2016 This week, Jean-Claude Juncker, the unelected president of the European Commission – the executive arm of the Brussels EU – stood up in the European Parliament to make his so-called State of the Union Address . Essentially portraying himself as Europe’s equivalent to US president Barack Obama, in whose country an official annual address or message has been given by every elected president for over 200 years, Juncker began by stating that the Brussels EU is facing an existential crisis. Bizarrely, however, admitting that the next 12 months would be crucial for the construct, he then went on to brazenly deny that the UK’s recent Brexit vote signals the disintegration of the Brussels EU. But with this assertion being so wildly out-of-tune with reality, the ineffectual manner of his speech was reminiscent of the Roman emperor Nero, who is famously said to have “fiddled while Rome burned.” Healt...

EDITORIAL: One Nation Hates Australia

Ne News 16 September 2016 This week saw the new senators make their speeches in the new Parliament (including some in the Senate). There is outrage over Pauline Hanson's speech targeting Muslims, in which if you investigate , Pauline Hanson's speech was full of lies (http://www.sbs.com.au/news/thefeed/article/2016/09/15/10-times-pauline-hanson-got-facts-wrong-her-maiden-speech). And fellow One Nation Senator Senator Malcolm Roberts linked the European Union to socialism (http://www.globalresearch.ca/australias-global-exit-tribalism-and-international-institutions/5545782). The allegations that the European Union is for socialism couldn't be further from the truth. As highlighted several times, it is NOT the left that is in favour of superstates such as the European Union, it is the far-right that is in favour of superstates. In Norway, the far-right wing anti-immigration party the Party of Progress, which appeals to xenophobia (much like One Nation here in Australia) i...

The Empire of Mediocrity and the End of the World

Phil Butler New Eastern Outlook 12 September 2016 Vladimir Putin has harmed no American. Russia has not stood in the way of any American’s dream. As for the billionaires though, those American and British money bags, the Russians are posing an insurmountable hurdle for their investments. And we all know nothing can stand in the way of their progress. Unfortunately for the human race, mediocrity cannot rule either. Here is a prophesy as real as any newsreel you will view today, the “end all” conclusion for American “exceptionalism”. Do you know where Crimea is? Seriously now, a gaff by presidential hopeful Gary Johnson the other day proved once and for all, not even educated Americans have a very big “mental map” of our world. I was a geography student first and teacher second, and I can tell you categorically that very few of America’s leaders know US history and geography, let alone world names and places. If Johnson had known where Aleppo, a city in northwest Syr...

Israel Ramps Up Its War On BDS And Other Critics With Heated Words And Targeted Harassment Campaigns

Richard Silverstein Mint Press News 8 September 2016 Mary Anne Grady Flores of Ithaca, N.Y., wears tape over her mouth during a rally in the War Room at the state Capitol on Wednesday, June 15, 2016, in Albany, N.Y. Critics of Israel’s treatment of Palestinians protested Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s executive order prohibiting state investments in any company that supports a boycott of Israel. SEATTLE — (Analysis) Last month, Reuters reported that Dutch authorities opened an investigation into months of death threats made against a legal researcher who is working with a Palestinian legal rights group at the International Criminal Court. Nada Kiswanson works on behalf of Al-Haq in The Hague, where she is pursuing Palestinian claims of Israeli war crimes and crimes against humanity committed during Operation Protective Edge . Israel’s assault on Gaza in the summer of 2014 killed 2,200 Palestinians–the vast majority of whom were civilians, including at least 500 children–t...
