Ne News
26 January 2017
Today is January 26, and even though I will be celebrating Australia Day, I will be doing so with a heavy heart due to the murder of our indigenous people, so in the heart of Ne News, it will be Invasion Day, which is a day that is not worth celebrating.
Those who want to mourn will be accused by the Mainstream Media of denying Australian history, but it is worth noting that Australia Day only commemorate the founding of Sydney and not the other parts of Australia. But in actual fact, the Mainstream Media are the ones who are denying history.
And the Mainstream Media in Australia has also been denying the horrible crimes that were committed against the indigenous people of Australia, and most of this historical revisionism is coming from the far-right wing media outlets such as those owned by the American media mogul Rupert Murdoch, who gave up his Australian citizenship in 1985 and therefore gave up his right to have a say in Australia. Take this quote from Governor Lachlan Macquarie:
It is worth noting that Australia Day hasn't always been celebrated on 26 January. This has been the case for the past two to three decades. It was only made a public holiday by Paul Keating when he was the Australian Prime Minister. In fact, it was previously celebrated towards the end of July or the beginning of August, but was moved, and the far-right wing John Howard institutionalized this for his own benefit and the ruling elite.
It is worth noting that New Zealand celebrates a treaty with the indigenous Maori people (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Treaty_of_Waitangi) and the New Zealand Government had negotiated settlements after breaching the Waitangi Treaty (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Zealand#History). Ne News supports a treaty with Australia's indigenous people, but there must be involvement from all parties involved. If New Zealand is mature enough to have a treaty with their indigenous people, then surely Australia is more than capable to have a treaty with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders.
When the treaty with the indigenous people is signed, then we can celebrate that day as Australia Day and not January 26, which is divisive. We need a day which we can all unite, from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders who have been here for 50 000 years right through to newly arrived immigrants.
