Debate over what date Australia Day should be celebrated, Kayne West and Kim Kardashian has announced the name of their new baby, and celebrities behaving badly...again. These are the news that has shaped the mainstream media landscape this week (at least in the West), but what have we missed out on that the alternative media has been reporting.
The Move Towards The Right In The Media
Throughout the world, there are divisions between the so-called "liberal" media and the "conservative" media, with the so-called "liberal" media getting a serving from people in both the mainstream media and the alternative media (https://www.globalresearch.ca/a-liberal-pillar-of-the-establishment-new-look-guardian-old-style-orthodoxy/5626504) . But what is worth noting is that throughout the Western world, the media (both "liberal" and "conservative") are moving towards the far-right, and this is best evident in Australia where at least 60% of the daily newspapers are owned by American media baron Rupert Murdoch, and the main political parties (both Labor and Liberal) are moving towards the far right to get votes from people who would vote for parties such as the far-right wing One Nation by demonising groups such as asylum seekers. Even the publicly-owned Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) has been subjected to political interference by the Liberal Party (https://independentaustralia.net/business/business-display/independent-media--our-democracy-depends-on-it,11112).
The media has also been subjected to "dumbing down", in which celebrity gossip and trivia has replaced hard-hitting news. Look at A Current Affair, which is the highest rating "current affairs" program on Australian television. Back in the 1990s, it was compulsory viewing if you want hard-hitting news, but now it is a shadow of its former self, becoming more tabloid. And on Sunday mornings in the 1990s, there was current affairs programs (such as Nine Network's Sunday) or interview shows (Seven Network's Face to Face and Network Ten's Meet the Press), but these programs has largely been replaced by tabloid infotainment programs complete with cash giveaways. Even the ABC has been dumbed down, but not as much as Seven and Nine.
As mentioned a number of times on Ne News, the goals of the far-right wing think-tank the Institute of Public Affairs is to break up the ABC and put each of its functions out to tender (Point 50) and privatise SBS (the other public broadcaster) (https://ipa.org.au/publications/2080/be-like-gough-75-radical-ideas-to-transform-australia). It is worth noting that once an asset is privatised, it is very difficult to see it return to public hands, but not impossible as we have seen with V/Line Passenger in Victoria (http://nenews2016.blogspot.com.au/2017/02/editorial-privatisation-root-of-fascism.html), and there are even calls in France for TF1 to be re-nationalised (it was privatised in 1987 by the French Government, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TF1).
It should be worth arguing that privatisation of public broadcasters would see a "dumbing down" of programs, as has happened with TF1 in France. We need to stop this dumbing down before it's too late.
Imperial Disaster
One issue that is rarely discussed in the mainstream media is the American Empire. The regime in Washington talks about freedom and democracy, and even saying that both North and South Korea marching in together at the Opening Ceremony of the upcoming Winter Olympics will give North Korean athletes a 'taste of freedom' (http://www.koreatimes.co.kr/www/nation/2018/01/103_242660.html), which as mentioned in yesterday's editorial is hypocritical of the regime in Washington, as they backed dictators during the Cold War, and even today are destroying democratic countries that go it alone instead of Washington's dictates (http://nenews2016.blogspot.com.au/2018/01/editorial-washingtons-dirty-laundry.html).
In Syria, US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson recently announced that the occupation of Syria by the United States of America will continue until three conditions are met (https://www.globalresearch.ca/imperial-disaster/5626548):
It is worth noting that Washington has announced indefinite deployment of troops in Syria (https://www.globalresearch.ca/us-announces-indefinite-deployment-of-military-forces-in-syria/5626551) to allegedly fight Daesh, but it can be argued that Daesh is a good thing for both Washington and Tel Aviv, as what is happening in Syria and Iraq could lead to the breakup of these two countries and give more breathing space for Israel who wants more of the Middle East and create a "Greater Israel" from the Nile to Euphrate, as shown on the left.
It is worth noting that the United States of America has military bases in around 100 countries (including here in Australia with Pine Gap among others, https://www.globalresearch.ca/full-spectrum-arrogance-us-bases-spanning-the-globe/5626489), and Iran's Press TV is reporting of protests in Okinawa in an attempt to block construction of a US base in the Japanese prefecture, which the United States of America returned to Japan in 1972 (http://www.presstv.com/Detail/2018/01/19/549443/Japan-United-States-Okinawa-protest).
But Press TV is also reporting that the military edge that Washington has with Russia and China is eroding with Defense Secretary Jim Mattis stating that this erosion has been occuring for several years (http://www.presstv.com/Detail/2018/01/19/549501/US-China-Russia-Jim-Mattis-). It is looking like that the American Empire is dying, which is a good thing for the world.
Missile Hoax in Hawaii
Next, its off to Hawaii where a false alarm occured in regards to a missile (allegedly from North Korea) (https://www.globalresearch.ca/hawaii-japan-false-alerts-of-a-north-korea-attack-we-are-brainwashed/5626542). But fortunately, it turned out to be a false alarm, but it took 38 minutes to cancel the alarm. A similar false alarm was sent by Japan's public broadcaster NHK to people throughout Japan (http://www.presstv.com/Detail/2018/01/17/549171/north-korea-nhk-japan-missile).
It is worth noting that last year, there was a conference on banning nuclear weapons that was boycotted by most countries that has nuclear weapons bar one, and that one country (North Korea) voted YES to banning nuclear weapons (http://www.globalresearch.ca/122-nations-create-treaty-to-ban-nuclear-weapons/5598230).
There were also talks about the North Korean "issue" in Vancouver, in which China, Russia and North Korea were not invited to attend, while on the Korean Peninsula, both North Korea and South Korea met to discuss the Olympics among others (https://www.globalresearch.ca/u-s-humiliates-south-korea-threatens-north-korea-trump-undermines-north-south-dialogue/5626501, https://www.globalresearch.ca/canada-embraces-us-war-threats-against-north-korea-epic-fail-of-vancouver-group/5626375). It should be emphasised that only the Korean people should focus on this issue, as it is them who will be impacted most.
That is the main issues of the week. Until next week.

- ISIS must be destroyed
- Assad must go
- Refugees must be returned to Syria
The war on Syria goes on. It is not over as many have said: but for outside intervention it never would have started. Even though the ISIS has been virtually destroyed in Syria, thus fulfilling the rationale for its forces being there, the US is refusing to leave. It has been playing a double game, declaring war on the ISIS while clandestinely cooperating with it in various ways. It wanted a Salafist principality in eastern Syria and the Islamic State gave it one. ISIS fighters criss-crossed the Syrian desert, towards Mosul and Palmyra, without the US intervening, although satellite reconnaissance would clearly have shown these lines of pickup trucks kicking up the summer dust. US Special Forces passed through Islamic State positions on the way to Deir al Zor, the US shipped takfir fighters out of Raqqa with their families and the US has been training takfiris rebranded as ‘rebel’ fighters at its Al Tanf base.
